Is it safe to diffuse essential oils around cats and dogs?
Not all of them, and this is the most important thing on this page. ASAKUKI's 'safe for your baby and pets' line refers to the BPA-free plastic, not to the oils. Several oils in common use are genuinely hazardous to household animals, and cats are the most vulnerable because they lack an enzyme pathway that other mammals use to process phenolic compounds. Tea tree oil is the one most often implicated in serious poisoning; eucalyptus, pine, wintergreen, citrus oils, peppermint, cinnamon and ylang-ylang also appear regularly on veterinary caution lists. Birds are more sensitive still.
How can I use it safely if I do have pets?
Three precautions, all easy. Check any oil against a current veterinary list before diffusing it. Run the device in a room the animal can leave rather than a closed one it is shut into. And diffuse intermittently using the 60, 120 or 180 minute timer rather than continuously. If your cat drools, vomits, becomes unsteady or breathes with difficulty after a session, stop and speak to a vet.
The mist output has got weaker. Is it broken?
Almost certainly not, it is mineral scale on the atomising disc. Tap water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium; the water leaves as mist but the minerals stay behind and form a hard film that damps the disc's vibration. Output falls away gradually, first a thinner plume, then intermittent misting, then nothing. It looks exactly like a worn-out device and is entirely reversible.
How do I clean it properly?
Every few refills, empty the tank and wipe the disc with a soft cloth, using a cotton bud with a little white vinegar or rubbing alcohol if you can see a film. Oil residue builds up alongside mineral scale, and citrus oils in particular are hard on plastics over time, so rinse between different oils. Using distilled or filtered water rather than tap water prevents the scale forming at all and is the single most effective habit.
What is the white dust on my furniture?
The same minerals that scale the disc. An ultrasonic diffuser atomises whatever is dissolved in the water along with the water itself, so hard tap water leaves a fine white deposit on nearby surfaces. Distilled or filtered water removes the minerals before they can be dispersed and eliminates the dust entirely.
Can I run it all night with the light off?
Yes. The mist and light functions operate independently, so you can run the mist with the light off entirely, or use the light as a nightlight once the tank is empty. ASAKUKI rates the noise level below 23 decibels, quiet enough for most bedrooms.
